Today we take a closer look at sanctions checks, an effective screening tool should be part of any company’s background screening toolkit. Keep reading to learn more.
What Are Sanctions Checks?
Sanctions checks are specialized background checks that are made using international or government databases. The aim of a sanctions check is to identify individuals who are forbidden from certain jobs, activities, or industries.
The sanctions program of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (or OFAC, for short) is a good example of how sanction searches work.
The OFAC publishes a list of individuals and companies that act on behalf of targeted countries or criminal organizations, such as drug cartels and terrorists. Those who are included in the OFAC list are called “Specially Designated Nationals” or “SDNs.”
It’s worth pointing out that SDNs have their assets blocked and U.S. citizens are prohibited from dealing with them in any way.
The OFAC list is only one of many databases included in a sanction check. However, this example illustrates the importance of this background screening tool.
Who Needs Sanctions Checks?
While a wide range of companies can take advantage of sanctions checks, some of the organizations that use them more commonly include health care institutions and financial companies.
A thorough sanction check usually includes databases that are pertinent to the industry in question. For example, healthcare sanctions checks include debarments, exclusions, and probations.
